Last October, a freshman at Washington State University passed out after consuming hard liquor and an energy drink. The student later died in the hospital. His blood alcohol level was about five times the legal limit.

That led to some soul-searching on the campus in Pullman, Wash.

It turns out an average of 200 students each year end up in the ER at Pullman Regional Hospital for alcohol poisoning and alcohol-related injuries.

WSU students build a robosub

A group of computer science and electrical engineering seniors at Washington State University is building an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), otherwise known as a robosub.

The underwater robot will be entered this July in the 15th International RoboSub Competition. The contest, in San Diego, is co-sponsored by the AUVSI Foundation and the U.S. Office of Naval Research.

Washington State University is finalizing its plans to cut $40 million in the current biennium budget.

Washington State University President Elson Floyd says he’s never seen anything like it in his years in higher education— he’s referring to the loss of 52% of the university’s net state appropriation in the past four years. And about forty million dollars needs to be cut in the current budget cycle through 2013.

Photo collection from Japanese internment camp donated

The largest private collection of photographs taken during World War II at an internment camp for Japanese-Americans is being donated to Washington State University.

The more than 2,000 black and white photo negatives were taken by George Hirahara and his son Frank between 1943 and 1945 at the Heart Mountain camp in Wyoming. (More photos inside.)

King County home prices down 7% compared to last year

Foreclosures and uncertainty are clogging up the real estate market, and one local expert says prices won't go up again before next year.

The median price of a home in King County is down nearly 7% compared to a year ago. That's one of many tidbits in the mass of numbers released this month by the Northwest Multiple Listing Service.

Sales data for February show the median sales price in Washington's most populous county down 7 percent compared to last year. The median price of a home in King County has dropped to $320-thousand dollars. That's about $23,000 dollars less than in February of last year.

Paul Allen gives big donation to WSU for global health

Washington State University is getting the biggest donation in its history – from its most famous drop-out. Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, is giving $26 million, to support the new School for Global Animal Health. Allen’s donation is just a little bigger than one given by his old Microsoft pal Bill Gates two years ago.
