Justin Steyer

Director of Digital Strategy

Justin facilitates management of Pacific Public Media’s digital department,  while implementing new and improved systems and platforms. Additionally, he is responsible for creative user interaction and involvement, as he actively works to improve service to the audience and support for our new media activities.

Before joining the KPLU staff in 2009, Steyer worked as a Web Producer for The Seattle Times; prior to that, he was responsible for photography, video and online content at The Bellingham Herald and worked in the capacity as editor and photographer at other Western Washington publications. In 2007, Steyer was awarded the Mark of Excellence by the Society of Professional Journalists in the area of sports photography.

Most KPLU listeners are familiar with tenor saxophonist, Ernie Watts, though his excellent work with Charlie Haden’s Quartet West. 

However, as we learn in this performance/interview with jazz host Abe Beeson, Mr. Watts has had a multifaceted career, working with everyone from Buddy Rich to The Rolling Stones.

Ernie is joined in this performance by Seattle pianist, Marc Seales, bassist Dave Captain and drummer Gary Hobbs.

Jazz Violinist Regina Carter: Bringing 'Southern Comfort' To KPLU

Regina Carter has been pushing the limits of what jazz violin can be. Last time Ms. Carter was in the KPLU studios, she had just released her album, Reverse ThreadKanou and N’teri, which explored African music in a fresh new way. 

On this visit to Seattle, with guitarist Marvin Sewell and bassist Jesse Murphy, she had just released her new album Southern Comfort, which features traditional folk tunes of the American South. This studio session features three tracks from the album: Cornbread Crumbled in Gravy, I'm Going Home, and Miner's Child.

How Meditation Is Changing Monroe's Maximum-Security Inmates

Seven maximum-security inmates sit in a room with their eyes closed, not making a sound.

Shackles bind their hands and feet, confining them to a metal chair bolted to the ground. A guard stands nearby. Yells and clanks from the hallway stray in through the open door.

This is what meditation class at the Monroe Correctional Complex looks like. The students, murderer and rapists among them, listen as volunteer teacher Cathy Iacobazzi walks them through a practice session.
