Kurt Elling to perform live tomorrow on KPLU

The New York Times heralds Kurt Elling as "the standout male vocalist of our time." We can't wait to heard Elling perform live at KPLU on April 15, 12:15 p.m. He'll is in town at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley April 14-17 in support of his new album, The Gate.

Elling talked about his new album with Liane Hansen on NPR's Weekend Sunday Edition.

Well, because we know you like shorter fund drives and we do like to show gratitude to our listeners, we have given you back a day of regular programming smack in the middle of our spring fund drive!

Get Involved: 170 Million Americans for Public Broadcasting

Facing a federal deficit, members of both Houses will look to cut spending and discretionary funds, such as those for public media, are on the chopping block.

One-hundred seventy million Americans watch, listen to or use public media each month.

KPLU is participating in 170 Million Americans for Public Broadcasting, a national, grassroots effort to rally the support and energy of listeners and viewers in communities from Homer, Alaska to Fort Myers, Florida. KPLU and its Seattle colleagues, KUOW and KCTS, are part of this national effort.

Martin Taylor's gypsy gene

Martin Taylor performs in the KPLU studios in Seattle on January 6, 2011.

Martin Taylor is widely considered to be one of today’s finest solo jazz guitarists. While still in his early 20’s, he was introduced to the world’s jazz audience as the guitarist with Stephane Grappelli, a gypsy-jazz violinist and co-founder (along with Django Reinhardt) of the Quintette du Hot Club de France.

Clear Conscience Recipe

 (serves one)

  • 1/4 large tangerine or 1 large orange wedge
  • 6 thin slices cucumber
  • 1 fresh lemon verbena leaf (or substitute lemon thyme, lemon balm or kaffir lime leaf)
  • 3 ounces fresh lemon-lime sour (see recipe below)
  • 2 ounces chilled soda water

For garnishing: sprig of fresh lemon verbena leaf and/or paper-thin slice of cucumber
