Bill would require drug makers to take back drugs

Some Washington lawmakers are pushing a measure that would require drug makers to pay for a statewide program to collect unused prescription drugs and other medicine.

The bill's prime sponsor, Senator Adam Kline, says he has majority support for Senate Bill 5234, which awaits a vote by the full Senate.

The pharmaceutical industry has lobbied against the measure, saying it's unnecessary.

Supporters say a drug take-back program financed by manufacturers would provide a permanent way for residents to get rid of excess over-the-counter and prescription medicine. They say it would keep drugs away from teens and potential abusers who often get them from medicine cabinets.

The bill would require drug producers to set up a non-profit group to provide one drop-off location in each county and major city.
