Idaho School District Dumps Plan to Arm Teachers
Officials at a school district in north Idaho say a plan to arm teachers is off. The proposal has been generating controversy in the Sandpoint area.
But that part of a school safety plan is no longer under consideration.
The superintendent of Lake Pend Oreille schools says he just can't get behind the idea of putting guns into the hands of staff and teachers. And in part it's because of lack of support among the very people who would be armed under the proposal.
Apparently, a survey showed that only 14 percent of classified staff and 8 percent of teachers liked the idea.
Now, the board member who originally floated this idea could still face a recall election next spring. A group of parents behind the recall drive says they're disappointed with how the board member has represented the Sandpoint area and they're going to continue gathering signatures.
The district is still looking into other school safety measures in collaboration with the county sheriff.
