State kills 2 wolves in northeast Washington

Officials say two wolves have been killed by a state hunter flying in a helicopter in northeast Washington.

The two animals are part of a pack the state Department of Fish and Wildlife is going to eliminate after the wolves preyed on livestock in remote grazing areas on the Canadian border.

Fish and Wildlife director Phil Anderson says a marksman killed the wolves on Tuesday about seven miles south of the Canadian border in an area known as Wedge.

Anderson ordered the pack's destruction last week.

The department says the pack did not respond to non-lethal efforts to keep them away from livestock. The department says the pack has killed or injured 17 of the herd's calves and cows.

In August, the state killed a non-breeding member of the pack.
