Police make contact with Lanza's 'missing' girlfriend and friend; Mother found dead in home

WASHINGTON (AP) — A law enforcement official says that 20-year-old Adam Lanza, suspect in the Connecticut school shootings, killed his mother at their home Friday and then drove his mother's car to the school where he went on a deadly rampage.

Adam Lanza's mother, Nancy, was a teacher at the school, said the law enforcement official.

One of the officials said earlier Friday that a girlfriend of one of the Lanza brothers and another friend were missing in New Jersey. Subsequently, the third official said police had talked with the girlfriend. One of the friends had to be reached in California, so it took some time.

Ryan Lanza, brother of Connecticut gunman, 'extremely cooperative' with investigation

A law enforcement official briefed on the investigation of the Connecticut school massacre says the brother of the gunman has been "extremely cooperative" and is not under arrest.

The official tells The Associated Press that Ryan Lanza, of Hoboken, N.J., is still be being questioned but is not in custody and is not believed to have any connection to the school killings.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the investigation.

Emotional Obama pledges "meaningful action" to prevent shootings

WASHINGTON (AP) — A tearful President Barack Obama said Friday he grieved first as a father about the massacre at a Connecticut elementary school, declaring, "Our hearts are broken today." He called for "meaningful action" to prevent such shootings but did not say what it should be.

"The majority of those who died were children — beautiful, little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old," Obama said.
