Seattle dry streak ends, missing record by very narrow margin

To show how close we came to missing the rain, Cliff Mass writes, here is the total precipitation as of 6 AM around the area for Seattle Rainwatch. Zero precipitation (white) was so close.

A rain shower Sunday night dropped the first measurable moisture since July 23 at Sea-Tac Airport. That ended the dry stretch at 48 days, the second-longest on record.

The record is 51 days set in the summer of 1951 at Sea-Tac.

"This is like losing a high-scoring basketball or football game by only 1 point....really frustrating!  There is a significant chance this will be the only rain Sea-Tac gets out of the frontal passage," KPLU weather expert Cliff Mass wrote in his blog.

Will we break the 'dry' record? Cliff Mass says, Unlikely

Will the stretch of sunny days end soon? Cliff Mass predicts it will.
Jake Ellison KPLU

The record for consecutive days without rain at Seatac is 51 days, set in 1951. To break that record, we'd need to see no rain through Tuesday.

"I think we are probably going to get to 49, but I don't think we'll get to 50 or 51," says KPLU weather expert Cliff Mass, a professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington. "It's tragic. But we're going to be happy with the second longest streak of dry weather in Seattle history."

Gorgeous Saturday, but clouds and rain on the horizon

esanchezleenheer Flickr

Enjoy a beautiful weekend, says KPLU weather expert and UW professor Cliff Mass.

But we've entered a late-summer pattern that should start bringing occasional showers, starting early next week. That brings an end to an annual dry period that makes the northwest drier than the deserts of Arizona, says Mass. It's been four weeks without measurable rain in western Washington.

Most venues are family-friendly, but the Redhook Brewery's Summer Cinema and Fremont's Outdoor Cinema host a few 21 and older showings for their R-rated flicks. Some events are free while others require donations or admission payments. All shows start at dusk.

Take a look at ten featured venues around the Puget Sound:

Summer camps: Here we go again!

Tim's daughters Lauryn and Zoe know the drill all too well.

With report cards mailed out and lockers scrubbed clean, it's time to say goodbye to school and hello to summer camps. Why no summer? Will it end?

Lower than normal pressures (in blue) and higher (in green) correspond to where temperatures are below and above normal.
National Weather Service, 7-15-11

Grouchy Northwesterners are starting to call this 'The year of no summer.' While we may be secretly glad to miss the heat wave that’s punishing the Midwest, we're wondering why we’re stuck with clouds … and when will it end?

When I talked to experts, the first thing they told me: It is no coincidence.

The dog days of summer are upon us

Life's a Beach

Believed to be an evil time "when the seas boiled, wine turned sour, dogs grew mad, and all creatures became languid," summer was also considered to cause "fevers, hysterics and frenzies." But, there are  some redeeming values, including beer and bikinis.

Actually neither of us drink beer or wear bikinis, but that was the first thing to come to our mind(s).

Clues to Washington's summer weather...or not

Kids and adults alike enjoy a warm day on June, 4 2011. Will there be more sunny days on the way this summer? It's tough to call.
Erin Hennessey KPLU

With the first day of summer this week, it’s finally beginning to look like it outside. If you think that’s a good sign for the rest of the season, think again. There really isn’t a good way to tell how summer will turn out.
